Family Resources on What is Social Awareness ?

Project and Purpose

In class students learned the definition of social awareness. Students also played a game called “Let’s Play Same or Different!”. Students then used their learning in the game to practice active listening.

Social Awareness is one of the five major competencies, or building blocks, of social emotional learning. Social awareness at a young age focuses mainly on how we get along with others. But social awareness also includes the larger contexts of living in communities and making our world a better place for all people. This lesson introduces building blocks to the competency of social awareness by helping students practice active listening and discussing the importance of understanding others.

Tell me about the game “Same or Different”. What did you find new or interesting?

  • What is the process for listening actively to others?
  • Why is it important to be a good, active listener?
  • How can we work together in this family to make sure we listen actively?

School to Home Resources on Social Awareness

In this lesson students will explore the concept of Social-Awareness. Students will consider how classmates are similar and different and practice active listening to learn more about others.

Format

This 25–35 minute lesson is designed for flexibility. It can be taught in one day or over the course of a week.
